Aluminum Sheet Weight and Price Per Kg: Buyer's Math Guide 2026

Aluminum sheet weight is easy math: length (mm) × width (mm) × thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. The shortcut most buyers use is kg per m² = thickness × density, and for the common grades that means 2.66 to 2.73. A 1220 × 2440 mm sheet of 3 mm 5052 weighs 23.9 kg, and at the Q2 2026 China average of USD 2.60 per kg the metal in that sheet costs about USD 62. Below is the density table, the weight chart, 2026 price data and the container math, so you can quote a job without asking anyone.

How Do You Calculate the Weight of an Aluminum Sheet?

Two numbers decide everything: the volume of the sheet and the density of the alloy. Get those right and any quotation takes about a minute.

Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000

There is a shorter version that works because 1 mm of thickness at a density of 1 g/cm³ equals exactly 1 kg/m²:

kg per m² = Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³)

A 2 mm sheet of 6061 comes out at 5.40 kg/m². A 5 mm sheet comes out at 13.50 kg/m². Once you have that figure, multiply by the area in m² and you have the weight per sheet.

Density by Grade: Use the Right Number

Every alloy has its own density, and the difference is not cosmetic. The values below come from IS 737:2024, and they line up with ASTM B209 practice.

Grade Family Density (g/cm³) kg per m² at 1 mm
1050 / 1100 Pure aluminium 2.71 2.71
3003 Al-Mn 2.73 2.73
5052 Al-Mg 2.68 2.68
5083 Al-Mg-Mn 2.66 2.66
6061 / 6063 Al-Mg-Si 2.70 2.70
7075 Al-Zn-Mg-Cu 2.81 2.81

Notice 3003 is heavier than 6061 even though it is the cheaper alloy. Manganese is dense. If you quote 3003 at 2.70 you under-bill by about 1.1%.

Weight Per Square Meter Chart: 0.5 mm to 12 mm

This table is the one to screenshot. All figures are kg/m², rounded to two decimals.

Thickness 1100 (2.71) 3003 (2.73) 5052 (2.68) 6061 (2.70) 7075 (2.81)
0.5 mm 1.36 1.37 1.34 1.35 1.41
1.0 mm 2.71 2.73 2.68 2.70 2.81
1.5 mm 4.07 4.10 4.02 4.05 4.22
2.0 mm 5.42 5.46 5.36 5.40 5.62
3.0 mm 8.13 8.19 8.04 8.10 8.43
4.0 mm 10.84 10.92 10.72 10.80 11.24
5.0 mm 13.55 13.65 13.40 13.50 14.05
6.0 mm 16.26 16.38 16.08 16.20 16.86
8.0 mm 21.68 21.84 21.44 21.60 22.48
10.0 mm 27.10 27.30 26.80 27.00 28.10
12.0 mm 32.52 32.76 32.16 32.40 33.72

Quick sanity check while you read: 3 mm at 6061 is 8.10 kg/m², so a 4x8 sheet is 2.9768 × 8.10 = 24.1 kg. That matches what our warehouse scales show, which is the only test that matters.

Common Sheet Sizes and What One Sheet Weighs

Most export orders are 1000 × 2000, 1220 × 2440 or 1500 × 3000 mm. Here is the weight of a single sheet in the two alloys that make up the bulk of demand.

Sheet size Area (m²) 6061 2 mm 6061 3 mm 5052 3 mm 6061 5 mm
1000 × 2000 mm 2.00 10.8 kg 16.2 kg 16.1 kg 27.0 kg
1220 × 2440 mm (4x8) 2.9768 16.1 kg 24.1 kg 23.9 kg 40.2 kg
1500 × 3000 mm 4.50 24.3 kg 36.5 kg 36.2 kg 60.8 kg

One thing worth saying out loud: aluminium is roughly a third the weight of steel. A 3 mm carbon steel sheet runs 23.55 kg/m² while the same thickness in 6061 is 8.10 kg/m². That 65% saving is the whole reason EV makers, solar mounting firms and curtain wall contractors keep buying it.

What Is the Aluminum Sheet Price Per Kg in 2026?

Metal cost tracks the LME, so start there. The LME aluminium cash settlement was USD 3,303 per tonne on 3 September 2026, and exchange stocks sat near 246,000 tonnes. Prices ran between USD 3,180 and USD 3,373 through August.

Add rolling, alloying and mill margin and you get the sheet prices below. These are published Q2 2026 averages from Expert Market Research.

Market Q2 2026 (USD/kg) Q1 2026 (USD/kg) H2 2026 forecast
China 2.60 2.41 2.48 - 2.86
India 3.56 3.30 3.39 - 3.77
United States 3.75 3.47 3.54 - 3.92
Germany 4.60 4.26 4.38 - 4.76
Global average 3.24 3.00 3.26 - 3.64

Every market gained about 8% in the first half of 2026. Germany stays the most expensive because of imported metal and energy costs. China stays the cheapest because rolling capacity is huge.

Price Per Sheet: A Worked Example

Say a customer in Poland wants 3 mm 5052 in 1220 × 2440 mm, mill finish, TUV paperwork. Here is the math we run.

Weight: 2.9768 m² × 8.04 kg/m² = 23.9 kg per sheet. At the China Q2 2026 average of USD 2.60 per kg, the metal costs USD 62. If the same sheet were bought in Germany at USD 4.60 per kg it would be USD 110 before processing. That 45% gap is why so many European fabricators buy from China even with freight and duty on top.

Then add what the buyer actually pays: cutting and shearing, edge protection, export packing, inland haulage to port and ocean freight. On FOB terms a 3 mm 5052 4x8 sheet usually quotes in the USD 70-85 range depending on order size and how tight the tolerance is. If you cut finished parts from the sheet on a fiber laser cutting machine, factor scrap from the nest as well, not just the sheet price.

How Many Sheets Fit in a 20ft or 40ft Container?

This is where weight, not volume, decides. Aluminium sheet loads are almost always weight limited.

A 20ft GP container takes roughly 25,000 kg of aluminium in practice once pallets, crates and packing are counted. Divide that by the sheet weight and you get the count.

Spec kg/sheet Sheets per 20ft Net weight
1 mm 6061, 4x8 8.0 3,100 24.8 t
3 mm 5052, 4x8 23.9 1,040 24.9 t
5 mm 6061, 4x8 40.2 620 24.9 t

For contrast, a 20ft box holds about 33 m³. Packed solid with 3 mm sheet you would fit metal worth 66 tonnes, so you run out of payload long before you run out of space. A 40ft high cube adds 43 m³ of volume but only about one tonne of extra payload, which is why thin sheet orders rarely benefit from the bigger box.

Why the Invoice Weight Differs From Your Calculation

Nobody ships exactly theoretical weight. Expect a small gap and plan your landed cost around it.

Thickness tolerance. GB/T 3880 allows about ±0.05 mm on 1.0 mm sheet and roughly ±0.09 mm on 3.0 mm sheet. If the mill rolls to the plus side, a 3 mm sheet is 3.09 mm thick and weighs 3% more than the math says.

Actual versus theoretical billing. Mills bill some sheet products on theoretical weight and plate on actual weight. Ask which one applies before you compare two suppliers, because a quote gap of 2-3% often disappears once billing basis is aligned.

Packing tare. Export packing for aluminium sheet runs 120-200 kg per bundle with wooden pallets, corner boards and VCI film. Ocean freight bills on gross weight, so a 25-tonne payload plus packing can push you over a container limit.

Three Mistakes That Cost Importers Money

Using 2.70 for every grade. It under-bills 7075 by 4% and 3003 by 1.1%. On a 20-tonne order that is 800 kg of metal nobody invoiced.

Mixing up per-tonne and per-kg quotes. A "USD 2,600 per tonne" quote is USD 2.60 per kg. Sounds obvious until someone types 2,600 into a spreadsheet and quotes a sheet at 60 times its real value.

Forgetting temper does not change weight. H32 and O tempers of 5052 weigh the same. Temper changes strength and forming, not density, so do not expect a weight difference when you switch temper.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate aluminum sheet weight?

Multiply length × width × thickness (all in mm) by the density in g/cm³, then divide by 1,000,000. The shortcut for sheet is kg/m² = thickness × density. A 3 mm 5052 sheet at 2.68 g/cm³ is 8.04 kg/m², so a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet comes to 23.9 kg. Our aluminum sheet and plate range covers 1050 through 7075 if you need the exact grade you are quoting.

How much does a 4x8 aluminum sheet weigh?

A 4x8 sheet is 1220 × 2440 mm, or 2.9768 m². In 6061 that is 8.0 kg at 1 mm, 16.1 kg at 2 mm, 24.1 kg at 3 mm, 40.2 kg at 5 mm and 80.4 kg at 10 mm. In 5052 the same thicknesses run about 0.7% lighter, so a 3 mm sheet is 23.9 kg.

What is the aluminum sheet price per kg in 2026?

Q2 2026 published averages were USD 2.60 per kg in China, USD 3.75 in the US, USD 3.56 in India and USD 4.60 in Germany, with a global average of USD 3.24. That was up about 8% from Q1. LME aluminium settled at USD 3,303 per tonne on 3 September 2026, and H2 2026 forecasts sit at USD 2.48-2.86 per kg for China.

Which density should I use for 5052 and 6061?

Use 2.68 g/cm³ for 5052 and 2.70 for 6061 and 6063. The gap looks like nothing, but on a 20-tonne order it moves roughly 150 kg of metal, which is USD 400 or more at current prices. Use 2.73 for 3003, 2.66 for 5083 and 2.81 for 7075.

How many aluminum sheets fit in a 20ft container?

About 25,000 kg, because these loads hit the weight limit before the volume limit. That works out to roughly 1,040 sheets of 3 mm 5052 at 4x8, 3,100 sheets of 1 mm 6061, or 620 sheets of 5 mm 6061. Send us your spec and quantity and we will confirm the loading plan.
