Stainless Steel Price Per Kg 2026: 304, 316L and 430 Sheet and Coil Cost Guide

Stainless steel out of China is sitting near $2.47 per kg for 304 2B sheet and $4.85 per kg for 316L in September 2026. Grade moves that number far more than thickness does. 430 lands around $1.27 per kg and 201 around $1.42. The rest of this page shows what the per kg price really includes, what it quietly leaves out, and how to check a quote before you pay a deposit.

What Is the Stainless Steel Price Per Kg Right Now?

These are Chinese export reference prices from 14 September 2026. Cold rolled figures are for 1219 mm slit edge coil, hot rolled for 1500 mm mill edge. They are material prices, not fixed offers.

Two lines worth remembering. 304L costs only about CNY 200 per tonne more than 304, which is $30 or so. And 430 is under half the price of 304, which is why appliance makers use it wherever corrosion is mild.

Read the fine print as well. These figures exclude processing, lifting, packaging, freight, taxes and duty. Your invoice will be higher than this table, and it should be.

Why Is 316L Nearly Double the Price of 304?

Nickel and molybdenum. 304 carries 8 to 10.5 percent nickel. 316L carries 10 to 14 percent nickel plus 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, and molybdenum is not cheap.

In September 2026 the gap between them is about $2.38 per kg. That is $4,850 per tonne for 316L against $2,465 for 304 at the same 2.0 mm 2B specification.

Europe publishes the split openly, which helps. Fastmarkets assessed the 304 alloy surcharge at EUR 2,178 to 2,235 per tonne in early September, and that surcharge is most of the invoice.

The rule I give buyers: pay for molybdenum only where there are chlorides, salt or chemicals. An indoor kitchen panel does not need it. A coastal handrail does. Our stainless steel sheet, plate and coil range runs from 201 through 2507 if you want to compare grades side by side.

How Much Does Thickness Change the Price Per Kg?

Less than most buyers guess on cold rolled. 304 2B runs $2,545 per tonne at 0.5 mm and $2,459 at 3.0 mm, a 3.5 percent spread.

Thin gauge costs more to make. More rolling passes, more annealing cycles, more scrap. Above 6 mm the curve turns the other way for a while: 304 medium-heavy plate is $2,413 per tonne at 20 to 25 mm, then jumps to $5,480 at 100 to 150 mm because those slabs are rolled to order.

So when someone says thinner steel must be cheaper, they are thinking about the metal, not the processing. On hot rolled plate the opposite is true, and the jump at heavy gauge is steep.

Is Chinese Stainless Steel Cheaper Than European Material?

On 304 the gap is real and large, roughly 23 percent against North European delivered sheet in early September 2026.

On 316L it nearly disappears. Europe was at EUR 4,150 to 4,300 per tonne, about $4,827 to $5,001, while China sits at $4,850.

Then the trade rules arrive. The EU runs safeguard quotas on stainless flat products with a 50 percent duty outside quota, and demand in Europe has been weak all year, so the duty often decides where a 304 order lands.

Short version: a price per kg tells you what the material costs. It does not tell you what arrives in your yard. Ask your broker how much quota is left before you get excited about a Chinese 304 offer.

Which Form Is Cheapest Per Kg: Coil, Sheet or Plate?

Coil, every time. Each process you add costs money.

In our own quotes, cut-to-length usually adds $30 to $80 per tonne, slitting into narrow strip $40 to $100, and PVC film $10 to $25. Rough figures — it depends on width, quantity and how many setups the line needs.

Quantity beats form, though. A 2 tonne trial order pays distributor margin, small-lot handling and a separate cutting charge. A 25 tonne container comes close to mill price. If you are testing a new supplier, accept a higher per kg on the trial and push for mill pricing on the repeat order.

What Is Not Included in a Price Per Kg?

Seven things show up on the final invoice and rarely in the headline figure.

• Width. 1219 mm and 1500 mm are base widths. 1000 mm, 1250 mm and 1524 mm carry a surcharge per tonne.
• Edge. Mill edge and slit edge are different products with different tolerances.
• Finish. 2B is the base. BA, No.4, hairline and 8K mirror are quoted separately, and 8K costs the most.
• Processing. Slitting, cut-to-length, edge trimming, PVC film, protective paper.
• Packaging. Eye-to-sky loading, wooden dunnage and edge protectors, plus the container weight limit.
• Freight and insurance. FOB and CIF can differ by $80 to $150 per tonne depending on port and season.
• Duty. Stainless flat products into the EU carry a 50 percent out-of-quota duty, and CBAM reporting adds paperwork on top.

Ask for the FOB price and the CIF price in the same email, on the same basis, before you compare two suppliers. Half the "cheaper" offers I see are quoted on different terms.

One habit that saves money: convert every offer to one basis first — one stainless steel price per kg, one width, one edge condition, one Incoterm — and only then compare the numbers.

How Do You Check a Stainless Steel Quote Before You Pay a Deposit?

1. Ask for price per kg and price per tonne, on a stated width and edge basis.
2. Check the weight basis: actual weight or theoretical weight? Anything beyond minus 3 percent tolerance deserves questions.
3. Ask for the mill name and an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate with the heat number.
4. Ask for the loading plan, the port and the loading window.
5. For decorative material, approve a physical sample before production starts.

That is one email to send. A deposit recovered from the wrong specification takes months.
