Aluminum Sheet Supplier in China: MOQ, Lead Time and Payment Terms 2026
A Chinese aluminum sheet supplier usually wants one 20ft container, about 25 tonnes, as the minimum for a custom spec. Stock sizes start near 1 tonne. Production takes 7 to 15 working days, then 12 to 35 days on the water depending on the port. Normal terms are 30% T/T deposit and 70% against the bill of lading copy. Below is what each of those numbers means in practice, and how to check a supplier before the money leaves your account.
What Does MOQ Really Mean for Aluminum Sheet?
Aluminum sheet is not sold by the piece. It is sold by weight, and that is why the MOQ number feels odd to buyers who expect a sheet count.
Two rules cover most cases:
- Custom spec — your own width, temper, tolerance, coating or alloy. Expect 3 to 5 tonnes as the floor, and many mills will ask for a full 20ft container, roughly 25 tonnes.
- Stock spec — 1220 × 2440 mm, 1 to 6 mm, 5052 or 6061, mill finish. 500 kg to 1 tonne is realistic, because the metal is already on the floor.
Here is the weight behind those numbers, worked on 6061 at 2.70 g/cm³:
| Thickness | kg per m² | Weight per 1220 × 2440 sheet | Sheets in a 25 t load |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 mm | 2.70 | 8.0 kg | 3,110 |
| 1.5 mm | 4.05 | 12.1 kg | 2,070 |
| 2.0 mm | 5.40 | 16.1 kg | 1,550 |
| 3.0 mm | 8.10 | 24.1 kg | 1,040 |
| 5.0 mm | 13.50 | 40.2 kg | 620 |
| 6.0 mm | 16.20 | 48.2 kg | 520 |
| 10 mm | 27.00 | 80.4 kg | 310 |
Look at how fast the sheet count drops as the metal gets thicker. A 20ft container carries about 25 tonnes of aluminum in practice once crates and pallets are counted, and aluminum is weight limited, not volume limited. Thin sheet runs out of weight long before it runs out of space, so a 40ft high cube buys you volume you cannot fill.
One thing trips people up here. If your job needs 200 sheets of 10 mm plate, you are ordering about 16 tonnes and you are inside a container. But if you need 200 sheets of 1 mm, that is only 1.6 tonnes, and you will pay a per-tonne premium for a part load. That premium is normal. It is not a scam.
How Long Does Delivery Take in 2026?
Production is rarely the slow part. Ocean freight is.
| Order type | Production | What adds time |
|---|---|---|
| Stock size, mill finish | 3-7 days | nothing much, metal is in the warehouse |
| Cut-to-length or slit coil | 10-15 working days | width and length cutting to your spec |
| Custom alloy or temper | 15-25 working days | rolling schedule and heat treatment run |
| Anodized, PVDF or PE coated | 18-30 working days | coating line slot plus colour matching |
Then add the water. Roughly 12 to 18 days to Southeast Asia, 25 to 35 days to Europe, Latin America and the US East Coast. Air freight only makes sense for samples.
It helps to know what your local mill is quoting at the same time. The CRU Aluminum Market Update survey published 22 September 2026 put average aluminum sheet lead times at about 7.8 weeks, up from 6.4 weeks in August. Auto body sheet went back to 9 weeks, common alloy sheet to 7.66 weeks, and can sheet to 7 weeks. That is domestic mill lead time in the US and Europe, not China, and it is a big part of why overseas buyers keep sourcing here.
Chinese supply itself is not tight. Mysteel reported August weekly output from the sheet, strip and foil sector holding near 390,000 tonnes with operating rates around 70%, after a stronger-than-expected off-season. H1 2026 production reached 7.649 million tonnes, up 8.6% year on year. So when you ask for a quotation, the conversation is usually about price and spec, not about whether metal exists.
What Payment Terms Do Chinese Suppliers Accept?
Almost every aluminum sheet supplier starts in the same place, and it does not move much from one to the next:
| Term | Where you see it |
|---|---|
| 30% T/T deposit, 70% against B/L copy | the default, and the one to expect on your first order |
| 30% T/T plus 70% L/C at sight | orders over about USD 50,000, or a first order with a new supplier |
| 100% irrevocable L/C at sight | large contracts and government buyers |
| 100% T/T before shipment | samples and orders under about 2 tonnes |
| Open account, 30-60 days | only after two or three clean orders |
Two rules are not negotiable. The beneficiary name on the invoice must be the same company as the business licence. And you never pay a personal account, no matter how good the price looks. If the bank details change halfway through an order, call the person you have been dealing with on a number you already had. Email can be intercepted.
How Do You Check an Aluminum Sheet Supplier Before You Pay?
China shipped 311,900 tonnes of aluminum plate, sheet and strip in August 2026, up 17.7% year on year, with exports to Mexico up 43%. Real mills are in that number. So are traders who will not answer the phone in March. Six checks separate them.
- Ask who rolls the metal. A mill can name its rolling line and send a mill test certificate with a heat number. A trader sends a generic PDF and gets vague when you ask for the heat number.
- Read the certificate. You want EN 10204 3.1 or ASTM B209 format: chemical composition, tensile strength, yield, elongation, and the heat number that ties it to your coils.
- Confirm the tolerance standard. GB/T 3880 for sheet and plate, or EN 485 and ASTM B209 if you sell into Europe and the US. On 1 mm sheet the thickness tolerance is typically ±0.05 mm.
- Book third-party inspection on the first order. SGS, BV or TÜV will check dimensions, flatness, surface and packing before the container is sealed. It costs a few hundred dollars and it is the cheapest insurance in this trade.
- Buy a sample first. 100 × 100 mm pieces by courier, a few hundred dollars with freight. Cut it, bend it, weld it, then decide.
- Match the bank details to the licence. Same company name on the proforma invoice, the business licence and the bank beneficiary, or you stop.
If you want to see the grade range and the sizes we hold before you start asking for certificates, the aluminum alloy plate and sheet range covers everything from 1050 to 7075 with the size table. The same checks apply to stainless steel sheet and coil if you buy both.
What Moves the Price Per Tonne?
The headline number is the LME. Aluminum cash settled at USD 3,303 per tonne on 3 September 2026. Q2 2026 published averages put aluminum sheet at about USD 2.60 per kg in China against a global average of USD 3.24 per kg. That gap is why your inbox fills up every week with offers.
On top of the metal, six things change the quotation:
- Mill premium. Rolling, cutting and packing, quoted per tonne on top of the LME basis.
- Temper. T6 costs more than O or H14 on the same alloy.
- Tolerance. Tight thickness tolerance wastes metal at the mill, and you pay for the waste.
- Surface. Mill finish is the base. Anodized, PVDF or PE coated adds a coating line and a colour match.
- Order size. A full container is efficient. One pallet carries a premium.
- Payment terms. Ask for 60 days open account and the price moves up to cover the financing.
One caution for the rest of 2026. North American mills restarted in June after outages, and the business that was transferred to China is slowly moving back. Export volumes were already down 3.1% month on month in August. Expect a fair price and a clean spec, not a 2025-style bargain.
The Order Process, Step by Step
Most first orders follow the same path. Knowing it saves a week of email.
- Send an RFQ with alloy, temper, thickness, width, length, tonnage, tolerance standard and destination port.
- Read the quotation and check the LME basis date written on it. That date decides whether the price holds for a week or for a day.
- Confirm the proforma invoice and pay the deposit.
- Production starts, and you should get photos at the halfway mark without asking.
- Inspection and a tolerance report before the container is loaded.
- Balance payment against the B/L copy.
- Documents: B/L, commercial invoice, packing list, mill test certificate, and a certificate of origin or Form E if your country has a trade agreement with China.

What is the MOQ for aluminum sheet from a Chinese supplier?
Stock sizes start around 500 kg to 1 tonne because the metal already exists. A custom width, temper or coating usually needs 3 to 5 tonnes, and most mills prefer a full 20ft container at about 25 tonnes. Part loads are accepted, but the price per tonne goes up.
How long does production and shipping take?
Stock sizes load in 3 to 7 days. Cut-to-length takes 10 to 15 working days, custom alloy or temper 15 to 25 working days, and coated material up to 30 working days. Sea freight adds 12 to 18 days to Southeast Asia and 25 to 35 days to Europe, Latin America and the US East Coast.
What payment terms should I expect on a first order?
30% T/T deposit with the balance against the B/L copy is the standard. Orders over USD 50,000 often run on 30% T/T plus an L/C at sight. Anything asking for 100% T/T up front on a full container is worth a second look, and a personal account is always a stop sign.
How do I confirm an aluminum sheet supplier is a real mill?
Ask for the mill test certificate with a heat number and check it against EN 10204 3.1 or ASTM B209. Then book SGS, BV or TÜV inspection on the first container, and match the bank beneficiary to the company name on the business licence. Our aluminum plate and sheet page lists the grades and sizes we ship with certificates.
Is aluminum sheet still cheaper from China in 2026?
On the metal, yes. Q2 2026 averages put sheet at about USD 2.60 per kg in China against USD 3.24 per kg globally, and local mill lead times in the US and Europe are sitting near 7.8 weeks. Freight and duty decide whether the landed cost still works for your market.
