Handheld Laser Welding Machine Shipping Guide 2026: Container Loading, Packing and Landed Cost
A 1500W handheld laser welding machine ships in a plywood case of roughly 0.9 to 1.3 CBM. A 20ft container swallows about 21 of those cases on paper, and loaders usually stop at 18 to 20. The machine price on the invoice is the easy part. The case weight, the delivery term and the last mile decide what you actually pay.
I quote handheld laser welders for importers in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America and North America. Every first order comes down to the same two questions.
Will it get here in one piece? And what is the real cost once it is standing on my floor?
Both answers live in packing and delivery terms, not in the machine spec sheet. Here is how it works in practice, with the case sizes, container numbers and 2026 market data I use on quotes.
How big is the wooden case for a handheld laser welder?
Every set leaves the factory in a plywood case with a steel frame. The case is not optional. A 2000W unit is only 85 kg of machine, and the case, foam and accessories add another 60 to 90 kg on top of it.
| Configuration | Net weight | Case size | Gross weight / volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1000W air-cooled handheld | 55 - 70 kg | about 110 x 60 x 110 cm | about 110 kg / 0.7 CBM |
| 1500W water-cooled, wire feeder | 75 - 95 kg | about 120 x 65 x 120 cm | about 150 kg / 0.9 CBM |
| 2000W internal circulation, 220V | 85 +/- 5 kg (published) | about 130 x 68 x 120 cm | about 170 kg / 1.1 CBM |
| 3000W 5-in-1 | about 230 kg | 150 x 70 x 125 cm (published) | 280 kg / 1.312 CBM |
The 2000W net weight and the 3000W case size are published figures from supplier listings checked in 2026. The other rows are typical values from packing lists I see on quotes. Your own case size is on the packing list the factory sends before shipment, so ask for that document before you book freight.
Two things trip people up here. Air-cooled units ship lighter because there is no chiller inside the case. And a water-cooled set adds the chiller, so the case grows and the freight follows. If you are comparing two quotes, compare the case dimensions, not the machine weight.
How many handheld laser welders fit in a 20ft or 40ft container?
Run the arithmetic on volume first. A 20ft container gives you about 28 CBM usable. Divide by 1.312 and you get 21 sets. A 40ft high cube gives you about 68 CBM, which is 51 sets.
In the real world, that number drops. Wooden cases need a strap line, a forklift lane and a gap at the door so the loader can close it. The realistic numbers I book are below.
| Container | Usable volume | 0.9 CBM case | 1.312 CBM case |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft | about 28 CBM | 24 - 26 sets | 18 - 20 sets |
| 40ft high cube | about 68 CBM | 55 - 60 sets | 45 - 50 sets |
| LCL, one set | per set billing | 1.3 - 1.5 CBM chargeable | 1.5 - 1.8 CBM chargeable |
If you are testing the market, send one set LCL. The chargeable volume runs higher than the case volume, because of the pallet and the stow factor. Do not be surprised when the forwarder bills 1.5 CBM for a 1.312 CBM case.
FOB, CIF or DDP: what are you actually buying?
Delivery terms decide who arranges the freight, who pays the duty, and where the risk moves from the supplier to you. That last part matters more than the price line.
| Term | Who books freight | Who pays duty | Risk passes | Makes sense when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EXW | You | You | Factory gate | You already have a forwarder in China |
| FOB | Your forwarder | You | On board at the Chinese port | Most first containers |
| CIF | Supplier's forwarder | You | At your destination port | You want one freight number but your own broker |
| DDP | Supplier | Supplier, baked into the price | Your door | One set, no import setup |
FOB is what I quote most often. You keep control of the freight and the broker, and you can see what the machine costs without freight rolled into it. That matters when you are comparing two factories.
DDP looks simple and it is not. The supplier has to guess the duty and the current China-specific measures into the unit price. When those move, your price moves with them. It is fine for one set. It gets messy on a container program.
What is the real landed cost of a 1500W handheld welder?
Start with the machine. Published listings for 1500W handheld fiber welders ran from about USD 5,200 to USD 10,800 in July 2026. That spread is configuration, cooling and support scope. It is not one factory being cheaper than another.
| Cost line | Typical range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Machine, FOB China | USD 5,200 - 7,500 | 1500W, wire feeder, 3-in-1 build |
| Sea freight, LCL, one set | USD 180 - 350 | Southeast Asia and Middle East lanes |
| Marine insurance | 0.3 - 0.5% of CIF | Cheap. Do not skip it |
| Duty | depends on code and origin | See the HS code note below |
| Customs broker | USD 80 - 150 | Per entry |
| Inland delivery | USD 100 - 300 | Port to your door |
| Power and water hookup | USD 0 - 500 | A chiller needs a water line |
HS 8515.80.00 covers laser welding machines. The general US rate for that heading is Free and the EU third-country rate for the welding heading is 2.7%, both per published tariff databases checked in 2026. What you pay on the day depends on your country and on the China-specific measures in force when the vessel sails. That number moved several times between 2025 and 2026, so confirm it with your broker before you sign, not after the container is on the water.
One warning that saves real money. If a supplier quotes HS 8515.21, that is resistance welding, not laser. Get the code right on the commercial invoice and you avoid a hold at the port and a storage bill while an officer reclassifies your machine.
What should I check before I pay a deposit?
Eight items. I put these on every quotation because they are the ones that turn into arguments after delivery.
- Voltage and phase. 220V single phase or 380V three phase. Air-cooled 2000W units ship as 220V single phase. Check the supply in your workshop first.
- Cooling. Air-cooled or water-cooled chiller. The chiller adds weight, one more item in the case and one more thing to maintain.
- Wire feeder scope. Is the automatic wire feeder included, and does it come with a spool of wire? A feeder is sometimes priced as an option.
- Spare consumables. Two protective lenses and two nozzles minimum. The protective lens is the part that fails first.
- Certification. CE documents and the test report for your market. Ask for the file, not a claim.
- Warranty location. Who pays for the part, and who pays the freight, when something fails in month three.
- Packing. Plywood case with a steel frame, and ISPM 15 heat-treated timber marking if your country requires it.
- Training. Online session or on-site commissioning. Whoever signed the order usually forgets to ask, and the operator is the one who pays for it.
If you weld stainless kitchen equipment, doors or railing, a 1500W set with a wire feeder covers most of what you will see. Our handheld laser welding machines are built around that job. For thin aluminum sheet you want the wobble head and 2000W, and for stainless steel above 3 mm you should be looking at 2000W or 3000W instead of stretching a 1500W unit.
Why is the handheld segment growing so fast?
The laser welding machine market was USD 3.55 billion in 2025 and USD 3.77 billion in 2026, heading to USD 5.06 billion by 2031. That is a 6.08% CAGR, according to Mordor Intelligence.
The handheld part is growing faster than the rest. Portable and handheld systems are the fastest growing system type at 8.39% a year, while robotic integrated cells still held 41.85% of 2025 revenue. Units priced under USD 20,000 opened the door for job shops that could never justify a robotic cell.
That is exactly why shipping and landed cost matter now. More small importers are buying their first laser welder, and most of them price the machine and forget the case, the freight and the duty until the invoice lands.
Frequently Asked Questions
What HS code is a handheld laser welding machine?
8515.80.00, the heading for electric, laser, ultrasonic, electron beam and plasma welding machines. Not 8515.21, which covers resistance welding of metal. Put the code on the commercial invoice exactly as your broker files it, and keep the machine description on the invoice consistent with the packing list.
How many handheld laser welders fit in a 20ft container?
On volume, about 21 of the 1.3 CBM wooden cases. In practice, loaders stop at 18 to 20 of the big cases, or 24 to 26 of the smaller 1 CBM cases, because the cases need a strap line, a forklift lane and a gap at the door.
What is the shipping weight of a 2000W handheld laser welder?
The 2000W internal circulation unit is 85 +/- 5 kg net. The plywood case, foam, chiller and accessories add 60 to 90 kg, so book freight on 150 to 175 kg gross per set.
Is FOB or DDP better for a laser welding machine order?
FOB if you already work with a forwarder and a broker, because you keep control of the freight and you see the machine cost on its own. DDP suits a single set with no import setup, but the supplier has to bake duty and the current China-specific measures into the price, and that price moves when those measures move.
What should be inside the wooden case?
The gun with a 10 m fiber, the wire feeder and a spool of wire, the chiller on water-cooled builds, two spare protective lenses, two nozzles, the tool kit, CE documents and the packing list. Check the spare protective lens. It is the part that fails first, and air-freighting one later costs more than two in the case. Our handheld laser welding machines ship with that list checked off.
