Aluminum Checker Plate 3003 vs 5052: Which Tread Plate to Buy (2026)

Pick 3003 for dry general flooring, toolboxes, van linings and decorative trim. Pick 5052 when the plate will see salt water, road spray, welding or real load, and pay the USD 150 to 200 per tonne extra without arguing. Both grades are non-heat-treatable, so the choice is about corrosion and strength, not about hard versus soft.

I quote aluminum plate, sheet and coil to importers every week. Checker plate questions almost always come down to one sentence: "Is 5052 worth the money?"

Sometimes yes. Sometimes it is money set on fire.

Here is how I work through the aluminum checker plate 3003 vs 5052 decision with a buyer, what the two grades actually cost, and what has to be on the purchase order before the mill rolls anything.

The difference is one alloying element

3003 is aluminum with 1.0 to 1.5 percent manganese. 5052 is aluminum with 2.2 to 2.8 percent magnesium.

That is the whole story. Manganese gives you workability and general corrosion resistance at a low cost. Magnesium gives you strength, fatigue resistance and salt water resistance, and it costs more because magnesium costs more than aluminum and the rolling is harder.

Neither grade can be heat treated. So both are supplied in H tempers, and the pattern adds a fourth digit to show the surface is rolled with a raised bar. You will see 3003-H22 and 5052-H32 on mill certificates most often.

Those figures are base metal values for flat sheet, not for pattern plate. Pattern plate carries a small rolling premium on top. Treat the ranges as a direction, not as a quotation.

What 3003 does well, and where it fails

3003 is the workhorse. It bends, it welds, it takes paint and it costs less. For a dry floor, a toolbox lid, a machine guard or a decorative panel, paying for 5052 buys nothing the customer will ever see.

Three situations where 3003 disappoints:

Salt. A trailer floor in a coastal market sees chloride every day. 3003 will stain and pit at the cut edges and at weld seams faster than 5052.

Load. 3003-H22 yields at about 115 MPa. If the plate spans a gap and carries a pallet truck, it will sag. Buyers who come back with bent plates usually specified 3003 to save money.

Fatigue. Vibration from a road trailer works on the plate for years. 5052 handles that cycle life better than 3003.

Where 5052 earns the premium

Truck and trailer floors, boat decks, dock ramps, offshore walkways, fuel tank treads, fish holds. Anything that is wet, salty, welded and loaded at the same time.

The money side is simple. In April 2026 the FOB China gap between 3003 and 5052 flat sheet was roughly USD 150 to 200 per tonne, and most of that sits in the magnesium content and the harder rolling pass.

On a 20 tonne order the gap is USD 3,000 to 4,000. That is not small. It is also less than one rejected trailer floor claim, which is how I usually frame it for a buyer who is hesitating.

One more thing on price: 85 to 90 percent of the plate price is the LME aluminum ingot, not the alloy. On 21 April 2026 the LME aluminum spot price was USD 3,495 per tonne. When a buyer tells me "your 5052 went up 8 percent in a month", the answer is usually LME, and the alloy premium did not move at all.

When neither grade is the right answer

If the plate is structural, step up to 6061-T6. Heavy vehicle floors, loading ramps, machinery platforms, stair treads on industrial sites. T6 gives you 240 MPa yield or better.

The trade-off is forming. 6061-T6 cracks if you bend it tight. Design the part flat, or bend in the O or T4 condition and age afterwards.

For marine deck plate over 6 mm, 5083 is the grade shipyards ask for. Higher magnesium again, better weld toughness in service. It costs more and it is harder to source in small lots, so most trailer builders stay on 5052.

The specification trap: base thickness, not overall height

This one causes more disputes than alloy choice.

Pattern plate has two thicknesses. Base thickness is measured on the flat area between the bars. Overall height includes the pattern, which adds about 0.5 to 1.5 mm on a five-bar plate.

The load-carrying metal is the base. If a buyer orders "4 mm checker plate" and the mill delivers 4 mm overall, the base is closer to 3 mm. That is 25 percent less metal in the section, and the plate still passes a casual check with a caliper on the bar.

So the order says: base thickness 3.0 mm, pattern height 1.0 to 1.2 mm, overall height approximately 4.2 mm, measured on the flat area at three points per sheet. Then the inspection has something to test against.

The standard to cite depends on the market. ASTM B632 covers rolled tread plate in the US, EN 1386 in Europe, GB/T 3880.2 in China, with ASTM B209 and EN 485 behind them for the base sheet. HS code for alloy tread plate is 7606.12, the same heading as flat rolled alloy sheet, because the pattern does not change the classification.

How to write the checker plate order

Skip the film and you will find scuffed plate in the container. The pattern face rubs against the sheet below it in transit, and there is no way to polish that out on site.

Cutting and welding notes

Most of our customers cut pattern plate on a fiber laser cutting machine or on a plasma table. With laser, run the pattern face down when you can. Pattern up gives you a moving focal point and an uneven kerf on the bar tops.

Use nitrogen on 5052. The magnesium content makes an oxide edge with air or oxygen assist, and that edge is hard to paint cleanly.

For welding, 3003 runs on 4043 filler and 5052 on 5356. Both weld well on a handheld or fiber laser welding machine at 1.5 to 3 mm base thickness. Clean the pattern valleys before welding. That is where the cutting oil and the road dirt sit.

Anodizing is one more split. 3003 anodizes to a clean, bright clear finish. 5052 goes slightly grey. For architectural trim with a bright anodized face, 3003 or 5005 looks better than 5052, even though 5052 is the stronger plate.

Trade measures worth checking before you book

Pattern plate follows the flat rolled category, not its own trade regime.

The EU has had a definitive anti-dumping duty of up to 24.6 percent on Chinese aluminum flat rolled products in coil, plate and sheet of 0.2 to 6 mm since 2021, with a scope review opened in 2025. The US has anti-dumping and countervailing orders on common alloy aluminum sheet from 18 origins since March 2021.

Whether your pattern, alloy and thickness fall inside those scopes is a question for your customs broker at the port of discharge, not for the mill. Ask before you book, not after the container arrives.

The short version

Dry, decorative, light duty, price sensitive: 3003. Wet, salty, welded, loaded, long service: 5052. Structural and stiff: 6061-T6. Deep sea deck: 5083.

Then write base thickness, pattern height and the measuring method on the order. That single line prevents most of the arguments I see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is stronger, 3003 or 5052 checker plate?

5052 is stronger. In the H32 temper it reaches about 215 to 275 MPa tensile and 160 MPa minimum yield, against roughly 140 to 200 MPa tensile and 115 MPa yield for 3003-H22. The gap is around 40 to 50 percent in yield strength, which is why loaded floors go to 5052.

Is 5052 worth the extra cost for a truck bed?

For a road trailer or a tipper floor, yes. The USD 150 to 200 per tonne premium buys roughly double the yield strength of 3003 and much better resistance to road salt. On a 20 tonne order the difference is USD 3,000 to 4,000, which is less than the cost of replacing one floor panel.

What thickness of aluminum checker plate should I use for a trailer floor?

Most trailer floors land between 2.5 mm and 4.0 mm base thickness in 5052-H32, depending on the span between cross members. Under 2.0 mm the plate drums under foot traffic. Above 4.5 mm you are adding weight the trailer does not need. Tell the fabricator the span, not just the thickness.

Does the pattern change the thickness tolerance?

Yes, and that is why the tolerance has to be written on base thickness. The pattern is rolled into the surface and adds 0.5 to 1.5 mm, so a caliper reading on a bar tells you nothing about the load-carrying section. Agree base thickness, pattern height and measuring points, then inspect on the flat area.

Can you weld 5052 checker plate?

Yes, with 5356 filler, and it welds cleanly if you remove the oil and dirt from the pattern valleys first. Expect a drop in strength in the heat-affected zone unless you re-temper, which is normal for non-heat-treatable alloys and is usually accepted for trailer and deck work.

What is the HS code for aluminum checker plate?

Alloy tread plate sits under 7606.12, the same subheading as flat rolled aluminum alloy sheet and plate over 0.2 mm thick. The raised pattern does not change the classification. Non-alloy pattern plate falls under 7606.11. Confirm with your broker, since national tariff lines split further.

Can FANY LASER supply both grades with a mill certificate?

Yes. We supply aluminum checker plate, sheet, plate and coil in 1050 through 7075, five-bar and diamond pattern, 1.5 to 8 mm base thickness, with mill test certificates and SGS or BV inspection arranged at the mill before loading.
