Fiber Laser Cutting Machine Installation Guide: Power, Water, Gas and Floor Requirements

A 3 kW fiber laser cutting machine needs three-phase 380V power on a 60A breaker, a concrete slab at least 200mm thick with 30 N/mm2 compressive strength, about 4.6m x 2.3m of floor plus service clearance, a matching water chiller, and assist gas, either nitrogen, oxygen or dry compressed air. Sort those five items before the container arrives and installation runs about a week. Miss one and you will pay for it twice.

I quote these machines every week, and the same questions come back: What power do I need? How thick should the floor be? Do I really need 99.999 percent nitrogen? So here is the whole site preparation list in one place, with the numbers.

The five things to prepare before the container arrives

What power supply does a fiber laser cutting machine need?

A 3015 machine with a 3 kW laser runs on three-phase 380V / 50Hz with a 60A breaker. The figure buyers get wrong is the total draw: the machine is not the only load. Add the chiller, the dust extractor and the control cabinet and a 3 kW set pulls around 15 kW.

Scale it up and the picture looks like this.

Laser powerSupplyBreakerTotal draw, whole set
1.5 kW3-phase 380V / 50Hz40Aabout 9-10 kW
3 kW3-phase 380V / 50Hz60Aabout 15 kW
6 kW3-phase 380V / 50Hz100Aabout 28-32 kW
12 kW3-phase 380V / 50Hz160Aabout 45-50 kW

Two more things matter as much as the amperage. First, grounding: run a dedicated earth under 4 ohms, and do not tie the laser into the same earth bar as welding equipment. Second, keep voltage fluctuation inside 5 percent. If your site sags when the press brake kicks in, fit a stabiliser. A laser source that keeps resetting is usually a power quality problem, not a laser problem.

Do not feed the laser off the same circuit as large welders or a big compressor. In my experience that is the number one cause of nuisance alarms in the first month.

How thick should the concrete foundation be?

The standard requirement is 200mm of concrete minimum, compressive strength of 30 N/mm2 or better, and flatness within about 10mm across the whole bed. A 3015 machine with a 3 kW source weighs close to 3,000 kg, and all of it lands on four levelling feet.

For a 4020 bed expect 4,000-4,500 kg, and for a 6020 gantry machine 8,000 kg or more. If your building has a 100-150mm slab, pour a raised pad or a separate foundation block. Shimming a machine onto a soft floor buys you a month of good cuts and then a year of taper and vibration problems.

After positioning, level the machine to within 1-2mm across the table. That is a technician job with a precision level, not something to eyeball.

How much floor space does a 3015 fiber laser cutter need?

The machine body is around 4.6m x 2.3m, but that is not the space you need. Leave 800-1000mm on three sides for service access and 2-3m on the loading side so a forklift can swing full 3000 x 1500mm sheets in. You can find the exact dimensions and weight for each bed size on our fiber laser cutting machine page.

ModelTable sizeMachine footprintRealistic room
30153000 x 1500mmabout 4.6 x 2.3m8 x 6m
40204000 x 2000mmabout 5.8 x 2.9m10 x 7m
6020 gantry6000 x 2000mmabout 8.5 x 3.2m14 x 8m

Add the pallet changer or exchange table and the footprint roughly doubles. Add a material rack and a scrap bin and you are at the numbers above.

Check access before delivery day. A 3015 machine ships in a 20-foot container, and the largest crate has to pass your gate and door. Measure the gate width, the door height and the turning radius for a 3-5 tonne forklift. One customer in South America rebuilt a doorway after the machine arrived. Nobody wants that week.

Chiller and cooling water requirements

Buy the chiller matched to the laser power, never a size down. A 3 kW source usually comes with a chiller in the 5-8 kW cooling class; a 6 kW source needs roughly double that. Undersized cooling is why machines derate in summer.

Set the water temperature to the laser maker's range, typically 20-22 °C in summer and 22-25 °C in winter. Most sources raise a high-temperature alarm around 30-32 °C. Use purified or demineralised water, and change it every 3-6 months. Topping up with hard tap water leaves scale in the water jacket and the repair is expensive.

Give the chiller air. Keep it out of a closed corner, clean the dust filter monthly, and keep the room below 35 °C. Never share one chiller between the laser and a welding machine, even if the numbers seem to fit.

Assist gas: nitrogen, oxygen or compressed air?

The gas choice depends on the material, not on the machine.

MaterialGasTypical setting
Carbon steelOxygen0.05-0.15 MPa, high speed, slight oxide edge
Stainless up to 6mmNitrogen 99.99%1.5-2.0 MPa, clean edge
Stainless and aluminium, thickNitrogen 99.999%1.8-2.0 MPa, bright edge before welding
Thin sheet, non-critical partsDry compressed air14-20 bar at the cutting head

Do not buy five-nines without testing. For most stainless up to 6mm, 99.99 percent gives you an edge that is already fine for welding. Stepping up to 99.999 percent roughly doubles the gas cost for jobs that do not need it.

Compressed air is the option buyers underestimate. Cutting with air needs 14-20 bar (200-300 psi) at the head, so a standard 8 bar shop compressor will not do it. The air also has to be dry and oil-free, or you will fog the protective lens. A 1.5 kW machine pulling air needs about 8-10 CFM at the laser, which means a compressor of 25-30 CFM so it is not running flat out.

For nitrogen supply, cylinder bundles work for low volume, dewars are the normal production answer, and an on-site PSA generator starts to pay back when you are cutting several hours a day. Ask us and we will run the numbers against your cutting mix.

Fume extraction and the room itself

Fume extraction is not optional in a closed hall. Size the dust collector to the table width and duct it outside; a 3015 machine needs roughly 2,000-3,000 m3/h of extraction to keep the shop clean. Filters get changed every 1-3 months depending on material.

The room itself should sit between 5 and 35 °C with humidity under 80 percent. Keep the machine away from grinding and manual welding bays, because metal dust on the optics is how most lens damage starts. If the shop is dusty, put a cover on the bed when the machine is idle.

How long does installation take?

Unloading and positioning takes one day. Then budget three to five working days for levelling, electrical connection, chiller water, gas lines, laser source install, optics alignment and test cuts. Add operator training and a full week on site is realistic.

Have these ready before our technician flies in: a qualified electrician, a 3-5 tonne forklift, the gas supply connected, water available, and one or two operators who will run the machine afterwards. When a customer has those five things lined up, we usually finish inside five days. When they do not, the trip stretches to two weeks and everyone loses money.

Five mistakes I see most often

  1. Breaker sized on the laser alone. Buyers read 3 kW and fit a 32A breaker, then the chiller trips it.
  2. Soft or thin floor. A 3 tonne machine on a 120mm slab will not hold its level, and no amount of re-levelling fixes it.
  3. Tap water in the chiller. Scale builds in the water jacket and the source derates within a year.
  4. Wet compressed air. Condensation reaches the protective lens and you lose a lens, plus a day of downtime.
  5. No ducting. Fumes in the hall, filters clogged in weeks, and unhappy operators.

Where the market is going in 2026

The reason site planning matters more than it used to is that machines are getting bigger and more instrumented. Future Market Insights puts the global laser cutting machines market at USD 6.9 billion in 2025, reaching USD 14.3 billion by 2035 at a 7.6 percent CAGR. Mordor Intelligence forecasts USD 7.82 billion in 2026 growing to USD 12.34 billion by 2031, a 9.55 percent CAGR.

Utilisation is the other half of the story. Industry 4.1 reported that North American and European sheet metal shops ordered USD 2.8 billion of laser cutting equipment in 2025, up 34 percent on 2023, while machine utilisation actually fell to 52 percent in Q1 2026 from 58 percent in Q1 2024. Material handling, nesting and changeover eat 60-70 percent of the production cycle. In plain terms: the bottleneck moved from the machine to the material flow around it.

That is why I tell buyers to plan the hall for material flow, not just for the machine. At EuroBLECH in October 2026 TRUMPF showed its new TruLaser 5000 with built-in cameras and live process data. Machines on a network, feeding production data into software, are the direction of travel. Leave network points and camera-ready space in your layout now and you will not rebuild the workshop in three years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What power supply does a fiber laser cutting machine need?

A 3 kW fiber laser cutting machine needs three-phase 380V / 50Hz on a 60A breaker, with around 15 kW of total draw for machine, chiller and dust extractor. At 6 kW plan for about 30 kW and at 12 kW for 45-50 kW. Keep grounding under 4 ohms and voltage fluctuation inside 5 percent. Our fiber laser cutting machine datasheets give the exact figure per model.

How thick should the concrete foundation be?

At least 200mm of concrete at 30 N/mm2 or better, flat within roughly 10mm across the bed. A 3015 3 kW machine weighs close to 3,000 kg and that load sits on four feet, so a 100-150mm slab needs a raised pad rather than shims.

What nitrogen purity do I need for laser cutting?

99.99 percent covers most stainless steel up to 6mm. You only need 99.999 percent for thick plate or edges that must stay bright before welding. Test a week at 99.99 percent and check the edge before you pay for five-nines gas.

How much floor space does a 3015 fiber laser cutter need?

The machine is about 4.6 x 2.3m. Plan 800-1000mm of service clearance on three sides, 2-3m on the loading side, and a realistic room of 8 x 6m once you add a pallet changer and material rack.

How long does a fiber laser cutting machine installation take?

One day to unload and position, then three to five working days for levelling, power, water, gas, laser source and optics alignment, plus test cuts and training. A full week on site is a realistic budget.
