Clean process water below 40 C with under 1,000 ppm chlorides: 316L, and do not let anyone sell you duplex for a potable water line. Chloride service from 1,000 to 10,000 ppm at 40-80 C: start at 2205. Seawater, offshore, or sour service with high chlorides: 2507, and budget for it from the start, because the alternative is replacing the line twice inside a 25-year design life.

The yield strength column matters more than most buyers realize. Because 2205 is about 2.6 times stronger than 316L, the wall on a pressure-rated line can drop 30-40%. That thinner wall eats part of the price premium. In practice the duplex upgrade can end up costing almost nothing per meter of installed pipe.

Why Does 316L Fail in Seawater?

Seawater runs around 21,000 ppm chlorides. Grade 316L carries roughly 2-3% molybdenum, which gives it a PREN of only 24-26. Above 40-45 C, or above roughly 1,000 ppm chlorides at process temperatures, its protective oxide film breaks down locally and pitting starts.

A real case from a Gulf operator: a produced-water line at 60 C with 8,000 ppm chlorides was specified in 316L. Fourteen months later it was leaking at three welds. The spec was not careless, 316L is a good stainless steel. It was simply the wrong grade for that service.

The fix in that same plant was 2205 at 1.9x the per-meter price of 316L. The line has a 25-year design life, so the upgrade paid for itself in the first replacement cycle. Every operator working in that service has now moved to 2205 as standard.

What Is Driving Duplex and Super Duplex Demand in 2026?

The super duplex market is moving past its old reliance on offshore oil and gas. IndexBox projects 5.2% compound annual growth for super duplex stainless steel from 2026 to 2035, with offshore wind foundations, carbon capture, and green hydrogen joining the traditional demand base.

Take a seawater intake system at 35 C with 21,000 ppm chlorides and a 25-year design life. 316L pits within months in that service. 2205 handles it but sits close to its critical pitting temperature in summer peaks. 2507 gives a 40 C safety margin.

The right split on that project was 2507 for the intake and 2205 for the downstream brine line. Specifying one grade for everything means paying 2507 prices on lines that never touch seawater, or 316L prices on lines that fail before the plant pays for itself.

The same logic applies when you buy plate and sheet. If you are building tanks, ducting, or structural parts that will see salt spray but not immersion, 316L with a No.4 or 2B finish is often enough. For immersion, load-bearing, or chloride process duty, step up to duplex 2205 or super duplex 2507 stainless steel plate and check the mill test certificate against ASTM A240.
