Laser Welding Machine Power: How Much Do You Actually Need?
Most buyers order one step more laser welding machine power than they need. For 0.5–3 mm stainless and carbon steel, a 1500W handheld unit welds at 3–5 m/min and costs $4,000–$8,000 FOB. Step up to 2000W when you run 3–4 mm in one pass or aluminium over 2 mm. Past 5 mm, a handheld torch is the wrong tool at any power — that is robot or gantry work.
The 30-Second Answer: Power by Thickness
| Power | Stainless / carbon, single pass | Aluminium, single pass | Who it fits | Input power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1000W | 0.5–2 mm | 0.5–1.5 mm | Signs, thin cabinets, repair shops | 220V single phase |
| 1500W | 0.5–3 mm | 1–2.5 mm | Kitchen equipment, doors, frames, general sheet metal | 220V single phase |
| 2000W | 1–4 mm (5 mm carbon with prep) | 2–3.5 mm | Stainless furniture, HVAC, auto parts, two-shift work | 380V three phase |
| 3000W | 3–6 mm | 3–5 mm | Structural steel, tanks, thick plate repair | 380V three phase |
Those numbers assume a tight butt joint, no gap, correct shielding and a wire feeder where the fit-up needs one. Open a 0.3 mm gap and every figure in that table drops by roughly one millimetre.
Why Thickness Alone Does Not Pick the Power
Five things move the number when you size laser welding machine power, and thickness is only the first.
Material
Aluminium reflects near-infrared light and pulls heat away from the weld pool, so it needs 1.5–2 times the power of steel at the same thickness. Copper and brass are worse. Galvanised steel welds fine at 1500W, but the zinc boils, so you run faster with a small gap and good extraction.
Joint type
A lap weld on 2 mm sheet takes 1500W all day. The same 2 mm as a full-penetration butt weld asks more of the machine, because the beam has to carry through the whole section, not just fuse the top sheet.
Fit-up and gap
This is where most quotes go wrong. If your laser-cut parts meet with a 0.1–0.2 mm gap, 1500W closes it with filler wire. If the gap is 0.5 mm because the parts are sheared, you need more power and more wire.
Production speed
Going from 2 m/min to 4 m/min changes the machine more than adding 1 mm of thickness. Speed is where the money is: a welder who finishes a sink in 6 minutes instead of 15 pays back the machine faster than any thickness upgrade.
Duty cycle
Running 8 hours at rated maximum power shortens the life of the laser source. If the shop runs two shifts, buy one size up and run it at 70–80% instead of buying right at the limit.
How the Market Actually Splits by Power
Buyers vote with their wallets, and the vote is clear. Here is the 2024 global sales mix of handheld laser welders by power band:
| Power band | Share of global sales (2024) |
|---|---|
| Below 1000W | 3.63% |
| 1000–2000W | 63.2% |
| 2000–3000W | 26.03% |
| Above 3000W | 7.1% |
Two thirds of the world buys 1000–2000W. That is not a coincidence. It is the band where a handheld torch still makes sense, the power supply is still 220V single phase, and the price lands under $8,000 FOB.
QY Research put the global laser hand welder market at $686 million in 2025, growing to $1,856 million by 2032, a 15.5% CAGR. In that same report the 2001–3000W band takes about 47% of units shipped, and Asia-Pacific accounts for 73% of demand.
MarkWide Research looked only at the medium-power segment (500W–2000W) in May 2026 and sized it at $985 million, reaching $3.1 billion by 2035 at a 13.7% CAGR. Penetration is still low: about 170,000 handheld laser units were built in 2024 against roughly 3.9 million handheld arc welders, or 4.41%. Forecasts put laser at about 860,000 units by 2030 and a 10.55% penetration rate.

1500W vs 2000W: Where the Line Really Is
This is the decision ninety percent of buyers face. The table below is what actually changes between the two:
| Spec | 1500W | 2000W |
|---|---|---|
| Price, FOB China | $4,000–$8,000 | $6,000–$12,000 |
| Stainless, single pass | 3 mm | 4 mm (5 mm carbon with prep) |
| Aluminium, single pass | 2–2.5 mm | 3–3.5 mm |
| Input power | 220V single phase | 380V three phase |
| Chiller | 1.5–2 kW | 2.5–3 kW |
| Gun weight | 1.0–1.3 kg | 1.3–1.7 kg |
| Where it wins | Sheet, kitchen equipment, doors, railings | Aluminium, 4 mm work, wobble welds, production |
The real cost of stepping up is not the price difference. It is the power supply. 220V single phase is available in almost every small shop. 380V three phase may mean a new panel, a transformer, or a utility application that takes weeks.
I have sold both sizes into the same workshop more than once. The shops that regret it are the ones that bought 2000W for 1.5 mm sheet and then paid for the electrical work. The shops that are happy bought 2000W because they weld aluminium tanks or 4 mm frames every week. All the specs we build are on the laser welding machine page.
When 3000W Is Worth It — and When It Is Not
Worth it: 4–6 mm structural steel, tank shells, thick plate repair, single-sided full-penetration welds, and shops running three shifts. At that level the machine earns its money on penetration, not on speed.
Not worth it: anything under 3 mm. You will fight burn-through, distortion goes up, the gun weighs close to 2 kg by the end of a shift, and you need a 380V panel plus a 3–4 kW chiller. Expect 30–50% more capital cost for welds a 1500W machine already does.
One more thing. Above 2000W, most Chinese laser manufacturers now recommend a platform or a robot arm rather than a handheld torch. The reason is safety, not sales: the reflected beam and the fume at 3000W are harder to control at arm’s length. If your parts are heavy anyway, a semi-automatic bench beats a bigger gun.
Five Costs Nobody Quotes With the Power Step
Every step up in laser welding machine power drags extra invoices behind it. These five never appear in the quote:
- Electrical work. A 380V three-phase drop with a breaker and cable is a real invoice, and in some countries it needs an inspection before the machine is legal to run.
- Cooling. 1500W needs 1.5–2 kW of chiller capacity. 3000W needs 3–4 kW, and water quality starts to matter for the optics.
- Gun weight and cable. A heavier torch does not feel heavy for the first hour. It feels heavy at hour six, and weld quality follows the operator.
- Consumables. Protective lenses and nozzles cost little until spatter burns one in the middle of a job. Bigger power, more spatter, more lenses.
- Electricity. A 2000W set draws roughly 3–5 kW in use, still about a third of what TIG pulls for the same joint.
What I Ask Before Quoting Power
Three questions, and the power picks itself:
- What materials, and what is the real thickness range — not the thickest part you welded last year?
- How many metres of weld per day, and how many shifts?
- What does the joint look like: lap, butt, fillet? What gap do your parts actually meet with?
Then buy for the 85% of the work you do every week, and send the other 15% out or plan a second operation. Buying for the worst part you ever made is how shops end up with a 3000W machine welding 1.2 mm panels at 20% power.
If you are between two sizes, send us a sample of your part. We weld it and send you the parameters and a video. That is faster than any chart, including this one. Details on the 1500W to 3000W models we build, or write to us through the contact page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What power laser welding machine do I need for 3 mm stainless steel?
1500W welds 3 mm stainless in a single pass with a tight butt joint, and it is the most common size we ship. Choose 2000W if you also run 4 mm, work with a gap, or want 5 m/min instead of 3. Our handheld laser welding machine page lists the power options we build.
Can a 1000W laser welder weld 2 mm steel?
Yes. 1000W covers 0.5-2 mm stainless and carbon steel cleanly in one pass. It is the right size for sign work, thin cabinets and repair jobs. It runs out of penetration at about 2.5 mm.
Is 2000W worth the extra money over 1500W?
Only if you weld aluminium above 2 mm or stainless above 3 mm. The price gap is roughly 25-40%, and 2000W usually needs 380V three-phase power plus a bigger chiller. On 1-3 mm sheet the weld looks the same.
Can I run a 2000W handheld welder on 220V single phase?
Mostly no. 2000W and 3000W units are built for 380V three-phase. A few 2000W models are offered on 220V, but the duty cycle drops and the current draw is heavy. Check your panel before you order, not after.
Does a 1500W laser welder need a water chiller?
Yes for continuous work. Water-cooled 1500W sets are the norm and need a 1.5-2 kW chiller. Air-cooled 1500W machines exist now, but they suit light duty, short runs and field repair rather than a full shift.
What thickness can a 3000W handheld laser welder do?
3-6 mm stainless and carbon in one pass, and about 3-5 mm aluminium. Above 2000W most Chinese makers recommend a platform or robot instead of a handheld torch, because of eye and skin safety and fume control.
