Four stories this week, and one theme runs through all of them: laser companies are chasing the same growth pockets. IPG Photonics posted $279 million in quarterly revenue, up 11% year-on-year, and most of that growth came from EV battery welding in Asia. GWEIKE expanded its Spanish-language resources to reach buyers in Latin America who research in their own language. FOBA will debut a new fiber laser marking system at IMTS 2026 next month. And Wolf Production Systems launched SkyLine, a standardized laser workcell you can run alone or link into a full assembly line.


1. IPG Photonics: $279M Quarter, Battery Welding Carries the Growth

optics.org reported on August 4 that IPG Photonics posted sales of $279 million for the three months ending June 30, up 11% from the same period last year. The bulk of that growth came from the company's industrial solutions unit, and CEO Mark Gitin was direct about what drove it: welding applications, especially battery manufacturing.

Asia revenue rose 19% year-on-year, which Gitin attributed largely to lasers bought for EV battery welding. He also pointed at stationary storage and data center energy systems as continuing demand drivers. Net income came in at $5.2 million, down from $6.6 million a year ago, mostly because of an $18 million write-down tied to exiting operations in Belarus.

Two more things in IPG's quarter worth noting. The company started shipping its Crossbow directed energy laser weapon system to Lockheed Martin, with a $10 million follow-up supply deal agreed earlier this year. And it moved to acquire Lumibird's medical laser business for over €300 million, betting on higher-margin ophthalmology applications. Defense and medical are a long way from sheet metal, but they tell you where the money is flowing at the top of the fiber laser market.

2. GWEIKE Expands Spanish-Language Resources: Speaking to Buyers Where They Search

EINPresswire reported on August 6 that GWEIKE, the Jinan-based laser builder, expanded its Spanish-language technical resources for metal fabricators in Latin America. The company now runs a dedicated Spanish site with engineering guidance, machine demos, processing samples and a guide to industrial laser cutting machine selection.

The content is genuinely useful, not just marketing. It walks buyers through power selection by material and thickness: 3kW to 6kW systems for thin and medium sheet, 6kW to 12kW for higher-volume production, and higher power for thick plate where cycle time drives cost per part. It also covers machine format — flatbed, tube, and combined sheet-and-tube systems — and how much automation actually pays for itself at different production volumes.

Why this matters: Spanish-speaking markets are a growing share of laser equipment imports, and buyers there research in their own language before requesting quotes. 3. FOBA to Debut Y.0602 Fiber Laser System at IMTS 2026

Machinery Market reported on August 2 that FOBA Laser Marking + Engraving will use IMTS 2026 in Chicago (September 14-19) to showcase laser marking technologies for traceability, quality assurance and material-specific applications across medical, automotive and electronics.

The headline debut is the Y.0602 fiber laser system. FOBA says its focus range reaches up to 99mm, which enables multi-level marking without repositioning parts — useful for components with complex geometries and varying surface heights. The company will also demonstrate a UV laser integrated into its M1000 workstation for sensitive materials like silicones, multi-coloured polyamides, TPE cables and transparent or coloured PVC hoses. A third exhibit pairs an ultrashort pulse laser with the M3000 workstation to produce deep black, permanent, non-reflective marks that stay readable at any angle.

The bigger story is traceability. 4. Wolf Production Systems Launches SkyLine: A Standardized Laser Workcell

Assembly Magazine reported on August 4 that Wolf Production Systems of Freudenstadt, Germany, launched the SkyLine platform — a standardized modular workcell for laser marking, soldering or welding. The company has built both standalone and fully automated laser systems since 1988, and SkyLine is its attempt to standardize that experience.

Each SkyLine cell runs as a standalone system or combines with others into a multistation automated assembly line. Cells range from 800 to 2,200mm wide and 1,000 to 2,200mm deep, and processing stations can be swapped out as production needs change. The AM 100 cell, at 1,000 x 1,000mm, accommodates most laser processing methods. Wolf will show it at The Assembly Show, October 27-29 in Rosemont, Illinois.
